Phuoc Toi (Phuoc Tuy) was in Southern Vietnam where American, South Vietnamese, Australian and New Zealand troops were stationed.
During the 1968 Tet offensive all the allied forces were engaged in heavy fighting against the invading North Vietnamese forces.
New Zealand 161 Battery alone fired over 500 artillery shells in this battle.
